1. Hydro-Geology of the Yilgarn Craton and Monadnock Outcrops

The vast interior landscapes of the Yilgarn Craton across eastern Bibbullmun territory are characterised by ancient, weathered Precambrian granitic inselbergs (monadnocks).1 In this semi-arid terrain, surface streams are ephemeral, leaving human survival entirely dependent upon natural and anthropogenically enhanced bedrock cavities termed gnammas (customarily ngamma).2 Bibbullmun hydrologists mastered the hydro-chemical dynamics of weathering pit expansion, converting modest lithic fissures into perennial, high-capacity freshwater reservoirs.3

2. Gnamma Morphologies: Pit Gnammas vs Canoe Gnammas

Two primary morphological classes of gnamma holes were engineered across granitic pavements: hemispherical pit gnammas and elongate canoe gnammas.4 Pit gnammas originated in natural weathering dimples where acidic water solutions dissolved feldspar minerals.5 Bibbullmun engineers actively enlarged these depressions by building hot hearth fires over selected fractures, subsequently dousing the heated rock with cold water to induce thermal shock spalling.6 Flaked spalls were hammered out with heavy dolerite hammerstones, systematically deepening the storage chamber into narrow-necked, bottle-shaped caverns that minimised surface area and evaporative loss.7

3. Hydraulic Capping, Filtration, and Maintenance Technology

To preserve water purity against severe summer evaporation and wildlife fouling, custodians constructed tailored stone capping plates.8 Hand-selected granite slabs were fitted flush over gnamma apertures, preventing birds and marsupials from drowning within the reservoirs while shielding the stored water from solar radiation.9 Custodial routes required routine seasonal desilting, where accumulated sediments and decomposing organic matter were scooped out with wooden shovels, and the granite walls scrubbed with river gravel to inhibit algae proliferation.10

Gnamma Classification Geological Genesis Anthropogenic Modification Evaporative Defence Mechanism Storage Capacity (Litres)
Narrow-Neck Pit Gnamma Deep spherical chemical weathering Thermal shock enlargement, neck narrowing Heavy granite slab capping; solar shielding 500 – 4,500 L
Canoe / Trough Gnamma Linear structural joint weathering Chisel flaking along strike planes Brushwood covering, branch filtration grids 1,000 – 12,000 L
Sand-Filled Gnamma Weathered sediment hollows Excavation of sand filtering layers Capillary retention within sub-surface silica matrix 300 – 2,000 L

4. Cartographic Songlines and Territorial Hydrological Sovereignty

Every functional gnamma formed a named vertex in an extensive oral cartographic grid.11 Songlines encoded exact compass bearings, travel times, and hydrological reliability under severe drought conditions, allowing long-distance trade embassies and ceremonial gatherings to traverse dry desert margins with absolute life-support security.12
